As autumn settles in and the days grow shorter…

We are reminded of life’s cycles—light giving way to darkness, growth giving way to rest. This season of reflection moves us gently from summer’s fullness to winter’s quiet. The veil thins as the light wanes, and we remember our mortality. We remember loved ones who have passed away from this physical plane. We also acknowledge losses and changes that impact our lives. Grief and endings have many facets and approaches.

A lit, red candle glows against the backdrop of orange and gold chrysanthemums.

Celebrations this time of year are filled with candles and brilliant colors of fall.

Across cultures and traditions, this is a season of remembrance. From All Souls’ Day to Día de los Muertos, from quiet vigils to vibrant altars, people have long come together to:

  • Honor those who have gone before us
  • Acknowledge the grief we carry, whether fresh or long remembered
  • Celebrate the gifts, lessons, and love that remain with us
  • Offer gratitude for the past, present, and to prepare for the future

When we remember in groups we help each other heal. More importantly, by sharing this experience with one another, we each realize that we are not alone. In this way, a group reflection event can bring a deeper level of peace and support that none of us can find alone.

Our world needs that kind of gathering right now. So we hope you’ll join us to support yourself and others.

Finding Healing in Reflection

Mt. Shasta trail through fall foliage with the mountain peak in the background topped with a cloud reminds us of the Season of Reflection.

Fall brings cooler temperatures and longer nights, reminding us that loss is part of life.

Grief can feel isolating, especially during the holidays when absence feels sharpest. Yet remembrance can also be a source of deep connection:

  • Connection to memory, as we recall moments we shared
  • Connection to others, who walk their own paths of love and loss
  • Connection to self, as we allow space for reflection and renewal

Grief encompasses more than mourning a loved one; the experience of loss can be wide and varied. Some have grief from individual struggles such as medical trauma, physical crises, or chronic conditions. Others experience a loss of community after a change in employment, housing, or as part of recovery from a natural disaster. All of these experiences are as much about grief as the passing of a loved one.

We gather and make space for one another in this event, regardless of the source of your grief. All are welcome here.

A Season to Carry Forward

However you observe this season—through ritual, prayer, or quiet reflection—we invite you to take time for remembrance. Write a name. Light a candle. Sit with a cherished memory. Allow yourself to feel both the ache of loss and the gratitude for love that endures.

This season of reflection isn’t only about looking back—it’s about carrying forward the gifts of memory. By honoring the past, we nurture peace in the present and hope for the future.

How to Join the Reflection Event

Season of Reflection Slideshow

Just as we are doing for our Blessing of the Animals event during our birthday party, we’re creating a Remembrance Slideshow to play during the event — a space to honor loved ones and symbols of connection.

We invite you to contribute:

  • A photo of your loved one, or a representation of your loss OR
  • A symbolic image of your connection to what you mourn (an object, a place, or a memory)

Step 1: Share Your Intentions with Us

Fill out the form below, keeping these things in mind:

– If you are reflecting on a loved one, you can use initials or your relationship to identify them (keeping things private). You are also welcome to reflect on wider situations of loss (medical trauma, disaster recovery, loss of community, etc.), grief shows up even when death is absent.

–   Any words of remembrance or intentions you’d like to include. These notes may be shared with the event group at the time of the event–and therefore may be recorded and available to a wider audience. We ask this question to start your healing process, so that you may join healing space with clear intentions. Feel free to journal or meditate on this question.

– Choosing a photo can be part of your preparation for the healing and grief work. The image does not have to be of a person, but that is certainly welcomed! If you prefer, you can submit a photo of:

      • a place that reminds you of the person or situation, or
      • an object that symbolizes your relationship, or even
      • a symbolic photo of a memory that always makes you think of them or the loss

– You need to hold the copyright to any images submitted, so it is best if you take them yourself (no stock images, please). We will be following your heart, not judging the quality of the images!
